Many people believe that they have a preferred learning style or one that is best for them. A person might believe that they are a visual learner and that they learn best when information is presented in graphs and pictures (Psychology Myths, n.d.). Another person might hold the belief that they are an auditory learner and is most compatible with learning approaches that present information verbally. (Psychology Myths, n.d.) The fact is that there is no empirical evidence that supports the concept that people have a preferred or optimal learning style (Lilienfeld et al., n.d.). The primary problem stems from unsupported beliefs about learning styles which usually lead people to narrow their learning strategies and approaches to adapt to the misconception (Lilienfeld et al., n.d.). However, this adaptation is potentially damaging since evidence from scientific experiments have shown that learning is accomplished best when human go wide and try to engage as many of our abilities as possible (Lilienfeld et al., n.d.).
