I think what causes irrational fear is negative experiences and trauma so severe that recalling the experience brings panic attacks and trouble thinking clearly. I also know there is a correlation between genetics and irrational fears (as Sophia said), as these fears/phobias can be passed down from your parents--this is quite interesting!
Interesting question!! I think irrational fears may relate to one's previous experiences and perhaps traumatic events. Those events and their emotional impacts may cause reservation or fear around a certain topic or item. Furthermore, I wonder if there is a genetic component, where fears are passed down from generations. Even if this is not genetics, it could involve learning behavior from parents.
